Scorsese's Improbable Inspiration:
The Red Shoes
(1948)

Martin Scorsese, Oscar winner for Best Director with The Departed, is known for his unusually violent depictions of gangster life. Yet it is the British director Michael Powell and particularly his masterpiece of ballet, fantasy and obsession, The Red Shoes ('48), that holds a special spot in Scorsese's heart and has guided his style on screen. Introduced by film historian (VCU) and former Scorsese video librarian, Trent Nicholas.

Get the inside, behind-the-scenes, nitty-gritty (in other words, get technical and hands on!) with filmmaker-in-residence John Porter in this three-hour workshop on how to make super 8 films on a $50-dollar budget! The Digital Video Senior Seminar isn't just about technology and equipment – it's also about storytelling and personal expression. Progressing from group to individual projects, students learn the limitless possibilities of the digital image medium under the guidance of instructor Todd Raviotta (MFA, VCU). The program will be followed by a Q & A with the students and Mr. Raviotta.

The public is cordially invited to meet festival guests and staff over hors d'oeuvres courtesy of the Virginia Film Office (cash bar) and to stay for the 8 pm screening of the Juried Competition finalists and the awarding of $2000 in prizes.

Annually the festival hosts a coast-to-coast invitational competition for original short films of 30 minutes or less in any category–narrative, non-narrative, documentary, animation–juried by Richmond area filmmakers and professionals. Join us for this year's screening of the finalists and the designation of the cash awards–up to $2000–and vote for this year's People's Choice Award! Co sponsored by the Virginia Film Office and the Virginia Production Alliance. The 2007 jury: Dr. Irby Brown, Professor Emeritus in English and film studies, UR; Robert Ellis, English, VCU; Ashley Kistler, curator, Visual Arts Center; Jere Kittle, web designer and super-8 filmmaker; Scott Dupre Mills, digital production, VCU.
