I
Am Curious (Yellow)
(1967, 121 min.)
7:30 pm, The Firehouse Theatre
Admission $5
The
notorious Swedish import that rocked Hollywoods boat! Ostensibly
the story of a young actress-turned activists growing political
awareness, the film became a cornerstone of the sexual revolution.
As flamboyantly reflexive as anything from the French New Wave,
and structurally a blend of fiction and cinema vérité
technique, I Am Curious
was directed by Vilgot Sjoman
(an Ingmar Bergman associate) who plays himself in the film. In
the States the film was seized by custom agents for its erotic content
and later was the centerpiece of a groundbreaking case in the Supreme
Court in 1969. As a result, the subject matter of Hollywood films
changed almost overnight (i.e. Midnight Cowboy, Easy Rider).
Its success also spawned a sequel, I Am Curious (Blue), in
1968, cut from the same footage shot for its predecessor.
P.S. The colors in the titles of the films are derived from the
Swedish national flag.
Introduced by Robert Ellis, VCU Department of English.
