Ray Harryhausen.Jason and the Argonauts
with Ray Harryhausen

(1963, 104 min.)
10 am, The Byrd Theatre
Admission $7

Animator/producer Ray Harryhausen will introduce one of his personal favorites—the 1963 fantasy classic of Jason’s search for the Golden Fleece. Harryhausen originally made notes about the film while working on Mysterious Island, and the decision to film not in Greece or Yugoslavia but Italy in the 11th hour of pre-production put the whole project in turmoil. But what was born became a timeless childhood classic—an epic and perilous adventure where Jason is challenged by the monsters of mythology, highlighted by Mr. Harryhausen’s incredible models and a music score by Bernard Herrmann, with Todd Armstrong, Gary Raymond, Nancy Kovack.  Don’t miss this very special show on The Byrd’s giant screen. Bring the family!

Note: Mr. Harryhausen will sign DVDs and copies of his new book, "The Art of Ray Harryhausen," in the lobby following the screening.

The Art of Motion with
Ray Harryhausen

2 pm, The Byrd Theatre
Admission $7

Animator/producer Ray Harryhausen will conduct a Q& A session while screening a retrospective of highlights from his long and esteemed career. A privileged look from inside the industry by one of the standard bearers of his craft. His stop-motion effects and movable models were a big influence on a number of top directors currently working in Hollywood, including George Lucas, James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. Director Joe Dante perhaps best sums it up: “Ray and Willis O’Brien did so much to transform stop-motion, and paved the way for so many amazing things that are being done now. The new ones are all very technically smooth but they seem to lack the heart Ray put into his stuff.”

Note: Book and DVD signing to follow—see above.
