Ray
Harryhausen: Born in Los Angeles, young Ray Harryhausen began
building models and illustrating dinosaurs as a teen, and under the
guidance of his machinist father would work out the ball and socket
joints of his models. An avid reader, he fell heavily for the scientific
adventures of H. G. Wells and in 1925 he saw The Lost World. Influenced
by Willis OBriens stop-motion technique in that and later
in King Kong, he would study with his idol and mentor, as well
as Puppetoons producer George Pal, and go on to establish himself
in the field with such youth favorites Mighty Joe Young, Earth vs.
Flying Saucers, Mysterious Island, Jason and the Argonauts, 7th Voyage
of Sinbad, The 3 Worlds of Gulliver, Clash of the Titans and countless
others. More than just the animator or f/x director, Harryhausen often
produces and collaborates on the writing as well. A true artist, in
1991, he received a special Oscar for a Lifetime of Technical Excellence.
Gary Lucas: NY-based guitarist and composer Gary Lucas has
been fascinated by all types of music since childhood, when a guitar
teacher bent a blues note that he recognized even then as the
imitation of human suffering. Once part of the art-rock Captain
Beefheart and the Magic Band, Lucas solo career is no less noteworthywork
with jazz-rock trio Gods and Monsters, the Du-Tels, the late Jeff
Buckley and the instrumental ensemble, Fast n Bulbous.
Hailed by Melody Maker as a true axe God, he recently
appeared at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival and the Jazz Em Agosto Festival
in Lisbon, as well as completing his fourth solo tour of Russia performing
his original score to the German 1920 silent classic, Der Golem. In
2003, Lucas performed the same show at the Holocaust Museum as part
of the 10th JRFF.
Martha Colburn: Born in Pennsylvania, experimental animator
Martha Colburn divides her time now between Holland and New York City,
and has exhibited her films at the Sundance, Rotterdam, and New York
Film Festivals, the Museum of Modern Art, and galleries in Europe,
New Zealand and China. A self-taught filmmaker who has completed 40
films since 1994, Ms. Colburn has also produced work for musicians
Jad Fair, Eye Yamatsuka and Jacque Berrocal. Most recently she
contributed an animated sequence for Jeff Feuerzeigs documentary,
The Devil and Daniel Johnson and worked on a music video
for Deer Hoof.
David Williams: A graduate of VCUs MFA program in film
and now a full-time professor in the Department of Photography and
Film, Mr. Williams has been making films since the late 1970s.
His critically acclaimed feature films Lillian, Thirteen
have been screened in festivals in Toronto and Berlin, and he has
been included in the New Directors series of the New York Film Festival.
In 2003, Mr. Williams was the recipient of the prestigious Rockefeller
Fellowship. His previous film, Long Art, a documentary on Richmond
artists Amie Oliver, David Freed and Bill Fisher played the 2004 JRFF.
Hotel
X: A 2005 recipient of Richmond Magazines Theresa Pollak
Prize for Excellence in the Arts, the eleven-member world jazz ensemble
Hotel X has been a mainstay on the Richmond and regional music scene
for a decade and a half. Having released seven albums over the years
