John
Hustons
Let There Be Light
(1946, B&W, 50 min.)
with Jim Colliers
Tears of Joy
(2002, color, 13 min.)
11 am, Richmond Public Library, Main Branch
Free Admission
Commissioned by the Department of War to shoot a 3-part series during
WWII, Hustons last installment was suppressed by the Pentagon
for nearly 40 years. Let There Be Light deals with traumatized
GIs and the miracles worked by psychoanalysis and hypnosis in an experimental
program at a hospital in NJ at the very end of the war. After a screening
at the Pentagon, a general exclaimed, He made an anti-war film
to which Huston responded, If I ever make a pro-war film, take
me out and shoot me. A truly uplifting and unique documentary.
Richmonder Jim Colliers Tears of Joy combines multiple
stories of Virginians rehabilitation and recovery in homage
to the human spirit. Mr. Collier will discuss his film following the
screening. |
