Buster
and Beckett: "Sherlock Jr." (1925, b&w,
53 min.) & "Film" (1964, b&w, 25
min.)
7:30 p.m., Firehouse Theatre, Free Admission
A
unique pairing and a must-see for Keaton and Beckett fansBuster
Keaton in his very own "Sherlock Jr." arguably the
best short feature he did, and 40 years later in the rarely
seen "Film," playwright Samuel Beckett's only screenplay,
directed by Alan Schneider. "Sherlock Jr." demonstrates
Keaton at the height of his powers, physically and aesthetically,
while "Film" reveals a tired and almost forgotten
Keaton, but a stalwart professional to the end, in Beckett's
absurdist endgame where reality and identity are tied finally
to the camera/eye perspective, a kind of "I see therefore
I am." Introduction by Trent Nicholas and Michael Jones,
Film Studies, Department of Art History, Virginia Commonwealth
University.
