“In the Mirror of Maya Deren”
(2002, 104 min.)
Firehouse Theatre, 1609 West Broad Street, 8pm
Tickets $5

Documentarian Martina Kudlacek has fashioned not only a fascinating portrait of avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren, but manages to place her importance in the diverse canon of American film history. Interweaving archival footage with Deren’s own excerpted work, interviews with Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas and dance pioneer Katherine Dunham, “In the Mirror of Maya Deren” also features a score by composer John Zorn. Perhaps best-known for her 1943 psycho-drama “Meshes of the Afternoon,” Deren’s interest in film and choreography climaxed with “At Land" and "Ritual in Transfigured Time.”
