Newsweek called Conrad Rooks 1966, Chappaqua, mind-blowing; The New York Times highly bizarre; The New Yorker described it as a superb feat of imagination. Check all of the above. Featuring appearances by Beat authors Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, with music by Ravi Shankar and The Fugs (guest Ed Sanders founded the band in 1965), Chappaqua (82 min.) is the semi-autobiographical story of a young addict (director Rooks starred, wrote and produced) who heads to Switzerland for the famous Swiss Sleeping Cure. Exquisitely photographed by Robert Frank, Chappaqua is a full-blown, psychedelic cinematic trip and a period piece with a message. In 1965 Jonas Mekas (also a guest this year) visited Tim Learys retreat and recorded a short film based on a conversation between the great experimenter and himself on LSD and creativity, which he edited into the 12-minute short, Report from Millbrook. Introduction by Dr. Walter Coppedge, Department of English, VCU. |
