Mission
The Richmond Moving Image Co-op supports independent media artists and enthusiasts by providing public screenings, classes, workshops as well as access to equipment, information and resources.

Background
RMIC was formed in 1999 through a partnership between the James River Film Festival and Flicker. RMIC was incorporated on March 1, 1999, and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status from the IRS on July 21, 1999. RMIC is an all-volunteer run organization.

James River Film Festival
The annual James River Film Festival (JRFF) was established by RMIC co-founder Michael Jones, along with other Richmond area university faculty members, media professionals and volunteers, in April 1994. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate and examine the history and continuing contributions of independently produced film and video. Each April the festival brings nationally and internationally known independent filmmakers to Richmond to screen and discuss their work.

Michael Jones and James ParrishFlicker
Flicker, established by RMIC co-founder James Parrish in April 1998, is a bi-monthly series of short Super 8 and 16mm films, primarily featuring new works produced by Central Virginia area filmmakers. The purpose of Flicker is to develop a “film community” by providing a venue for local, independent filmmakers to screen their new works. Flicker is held five times per year.

Juried Competition
The annual James River Film Festival includes a juried competition for short films (30 minutes or less). Submissions come from Central Virginia and all over the United States. JRFF awards up to $2,000 in cash and prizes – another way RMIC supports and stimulates independent filmmaking.

Programs & Screenings
In 2001, thanks to a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, RMIC began a regular series of independent film programs at The Firehouse Theatre and other Richmond locations.
